Cantautor estadounidense, una de las figuras legendarias de la música folclórica de EE.UU. A los 15 años abandonó el hogar para viajar por el país en trenes de carga. Con su guitarra y su armónica cantó en los campamentos de vagabundos e inmigrantes durante la gran depresión, convirtiéndose más tarde en el vocero musical del sentir laboral y populista. Escribió más de mil canciones, incluidas "So Long (It's Been Good to Know Yuh), "Hard Traveling y "Union Maid. En Nueva York se unió a Pete Seeger y otros en el grupo Almanac Singers. Después de servir en la segunda guerra mundial, siguió dando conciertos con esa banda para grupos de granjeros y trabajadores. "This Land Is Your Land fue su canción más famosa, convirtiéndose en el himno nacional oficioso. Su autobiografía, Bound for Glory (1943), fue filmada en 1976. Su hijo Arlo (n. 1947) también alcanzó el éxito como cantautor.
